3-D is here to stay

  • 3D TVs were everywhere, with all major brands (Sharp, Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, LG) showcasing their latest models.

  • 3D DVD Players allow for 3D movies to be viewed

  • 3D Gaming - Although 3D gaming was already introduced last year, it is the advanced 3D TV sets and monitors that make for an amazing experience

  • 3D Camcorders (Panasonic selling for $21,000) allows you to capture those once in a lifetime moments in 3D!

Placeshifting

  • DLNA technology, cloud computing. DLNA devices can all speak to each other through platforms developed by other companies). Over 6,000 devices with DLNA embedded

  • Sling Media – Bunch of new technology to allow users to watch DVR saved video via mobile or in other rooms

  • Motorola DVR – Mover – Mirrors content on DVR and then transports to portable devices for viewing (mainly iPod Touches, Phones). Material deletes when it is delete on DVR
  • The Motorola Mover connects to a DVR set-top with a secure IP connection and applies digital rights management (DRM) rules during the transfer of content. Once the content is transferred to the Mover, consumers can download it for on-the-go viewing--on a PC, personal media player or mobile phone without needing a network connection.

E-Readers becoming big

o Many models on display (such as the Hanvon N61H WiseReader (left) and the N526 WiseReader priced at $330)

o Exciting development with Entourage device – dual screen, 1 color, 1 e-ink technology
o Some geared towards students, others (like Que) geared towards the business person
o Lack of standardization

o The larger a store, the more important it will be to connect to that store, the less important doing individual distribution deals for us

o B&N Nook device got laughed at – no presence at CES. Back to the drawing board

o Samsung displaying their own e-reader device. Uses Google bookstore as source of titles.

o Reminds me of looking at a really old device b/c it is black and white. Still waiting for something much cooler (Apple Tablet? Dell Tablet?)

Car Tech

o Chevy Volt allows for a mobile app to check battery levels, other key diagnostic stats on your car

o MSFT Sync technology in Ford Taurus 2011 model to provide even greater options for users

o No car tech devices have actual hard drives
o Preloading content not an option
o Many great screens, still need to load DVDs / CDs

Music as a role in selling devices

  • Only clear example is Monster’s Headphones – Announced partnership with Lady Gaga on new earbud models, Beats by Dre series everywhere, released “Solo” model, smaller version

  • Monster also announcing more hard core DJ Headphones for Beats by Dre series

  • Music used as a media to showcase some technology around car audio systems

Preloading Content in the form of Widgets

o TV Widgets were big – All TVs showcased Youtube, Netflix, Facebook, Flickr, etc as widgets. Sony Example:

o For straight preloaded content - can see potential in Sony PSP, Sony EReaders, Dell laptops

o Seen really in completely branded device (like MLB Dell laptop), where when you purchase this MLB laptop, you get a year's subscription to MLB.TV live streaming servicve.

Mobile handset devices - Droid / Mobile TV

  • Motorola had a huge booth, very into marketing Droid

  • Sony Ericsson marketed new Droid Phone (Xperia X10)
  • Samsung has new mobile TV phone w/Antenna

Mobile TV devices (some utilizing free channels) a bigger theme

  • Tivit - Mobile TV Device with similar capabilities

  • Cydle – Korean company with devices in US, Brazil, Japan - displays only regionally free-to-air channels
  • Flo TV – Paid services had good presence

Wireless Connectivity / Thinner wires

o HDMI wireless – Monster has a cool new product for this. Monster also announces super-thin HDMI Cables to get rid of the bulk

o Powermat – get rid of cables for charging devices

Focus on CP

· Skins for phones, computers

· DJ equipment (Ion / Numark)

· Wristwatch company (Kempler & Strauss)

Other cool geeky stuff

Other Cool Stuff /Geek moments

• Sling Box Monitor - OEM only, but place shift to use single DVR box (with 2 tuners) to watch
• Waterproof HD Camcorders
• Wireless connected SD Disks
• Circular handheld wireless mouse much easier on your hand (seen at Intel booth)
